An independent news blog about one brand
About the Shipley Donuts Journal
Franchise signings, store openings, menu campaigns, and community projects — reported in one place, without the marketing language that usually surrounds a franchise announcement.
Why a single-brand blog
One chain, followed from the announcement to the day the doors open.
Most business coverage treats a franchise deal as a line item. We take the opposite approach and follow one brand in depth, which means we can carry a story from the announcement through construction to the day the doors open. That works because Shipley has been expanding steadily enough to generate a continuous news cycle. Ohio, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Oklahoma all produced stories in the same stretch.
Following one brand also makes the details checkable. When a second announcement touches a market we have already covered, we can compare what was promised with what has actually opened, and say so in the story. A general business desk cannot do that at this pace, and a press release will not do it either.
A glazing line at midday. Menu coverage is filed under the beat that fits its main angle.
Our coverage beats
We run five sections, and each story is filed under the beat that fits its main angle. Nothing is cross-posted to make a section look busier than it is.
- Business & Franchise agreements and development deals
- New Locations construction, relocations, market entries
- Menu & Promotions limited-time items and value deals
- Community & Culture nonprofit agreements, local projects
- Economy growth reporting across several markets
What we will and will not print
We don't publish unverified rumors, and we don't estimate financial figures that were never disclosed.
Read our editorial standardsThe editorial team
The Journal is written and edited by a small team that handles reporting, verification, and corrections in-house. We don't run outside contributors under the Journal's name, and we don't accept payment for coverage.
Story assignments follow the news. When a franchise agreement is announced, it gets covered; when a campaign ends, it gets closed out in the archive. Nobody pitches us a story to place on a calendar, and no section waits for a slow week to fill itself.
That division keeps the desk small on purpose. A reporter who files a development agreement also answers the correction if a number turns out wrong, so the same person owns the story from first draft to fix.
Reporting, verification, and corrections are handled in-house.
How we started covering this brand
The site began as a way to keep track of franchise announcements that were scattered across trade publications and local outlets, without an obvious place to read them in sequence. The 2026 expansion made that gap more obvious. Deals in five states in a few months are hard to follow when each one lives in a different press release.
The Journal exists to keep them in one place. A reader who wants to know how a market filled in over a year can open one section and read it top to bottom instead of chasing a dozen separate notices. That is the whole reason the archive is organized by beat rather than by date alone.
What independence means here
We are not Shipley Donuts and we don't speak for the company. Franchise inquiries, employment questions, and store complaints should go directly to the brand or to the franchisee. We cover the business, we don't resolve customer issues, and we don't have access to internal company information. When we report a plan, it is because the company or a public record said so.
Where our stories come from
Announcements, franchise trade press, local news, and public filings. Local outlets do the heavy lifting on store-level news, and we credit them when we build on their reporting. Reader tips fill the gaps, particularly for community stories and local openings that never generate a press release. The contact page lists how to reach the newsroom.
What we don't publish
No unverified rumors, no estimated financial figures that were never disclosed, and no reviews of individual shops. We also don't cover the brand's competitors except where a comparison is part of a Shipley story. Every piece identifies what it was based on, and our editorial standards page explains how that works in practice.
Questions readers send us
The same handful of questions arrives most weeks. These are the honest answers.
Are you affiliated with Shipley Donuts? open
No. The Journal is independent of the company. We report on the brand and its franchisees but have no ownership stake, no editorial approval from them, and no access to internal information.
Can I ask about opening a franchise through you? open
We can't help with that. Franchise inquiries, applications, and territory questions go to the brand or to its franchising department, not to this newsroom.
A store near me got something wrong. Will you take it up? open
We don't resolve customer issues. Complaints about an order, a refund, or a service experience belong with the shop's management or the brand's customer channel.
How do I send a tip about a local opening? open
Use the contact page. Tell us what you saw, roughly when, and where. A photo of a storefront under construction or a public notice posted on a window helps more than a forwarded post.
Will you cover a competitor's expansion too? open
Only when a comparison is part of a Shipley story, such as a market where two chains are both opening. We are a single-brand publication, and we say so up front rather than pretending the coverage is broad.
Where to continue
If you are new here, the archive is the fastest way in. If you want to know how a story was put together, the standards page walks through sourcing, attribution, and corrections. Tips and questions go to the newsroom.
